Reading Help

Helping your children with their reading is a simple process once you have the proper tools

Many kids have a difficult time learning how to read. For parents it can be difficult to know when to wait and see if their children pick it up and when to intervene and get them some help. It can be difficult for both children and parents alike when a child is struggling in school. Taking some time to learn about your options when it comes to helping your child can make it less stressful.

One thing to do if you believe that your child is struggling with reading is to have them assessed. The federal government requires that school districts offer a free assessment to preschoolers who may be struggling. It is also a good idea to speak with your child’s teacher. Ask for their assessment of your child’s skills and find out if there are things you can do at home to help your kid read. Your pediatrician can help you screen your child from problems with hearing or vision which can be impacting their ability to read.

If it turns out that your child does need reading help then it is a good idea to explore all your options. Children who have been diagnosed with a learning disability will be eligible to receive special services for free. It is also a good idea to provide a supportive environment at home. Struggling with reading can be very stressful for a child. One of the most important things you can do for your child is to let them know how much they are supported by you. A child who is struggling to read can quickly develop problems with self esteem. It is not a good idea to put a lot of pressure on them to perform while they are trying to overcome this issue. Make sure your child knows that they are loved and that you will help them get through this in whatever way you can.
